When Instagram first launched, IG became a platform for people to share photos, much like a more social version of other photo-sharing platforms like Flickr. However, over the years Instagram has evolved into more than just a platform for sharing photos, today IG has become a hybrid platform that not only shares photos but also shares videos.
Nonetheless, it’s not too surprising to learn that Instagram will later shift its focus to video-based content. In a post on Twitter from Adam Mosseri (Head of Instagram), he revealed that for 2022, the company will double its focus on its video content with features like Reels.
Video is nothing new on Instagram and the company ‘allows’ users to post videos on their Feed, Stories, or through their IGTV. Reels is the company’s newest feature and is designed to allow them to compete with other platforms like TikTok, whose popularity has exploded recently.
We imagine that this could be one reason why Instagram has chosen to focus more on its video features for 2022, so it will be interesting to see what kind of new features the company might roll out to make IG more competitive.
Apart from focusing on video, Mosseri also stated that it plans to target a messaging service by 2022, where they hope more people can connect through the messaging service.
